Barack Obama's 1 million donors...

Thu Feb 21, 2008 at 08:54:25 AM PDT

Shortly after Obama announced he was running for president, I remember him giving a short speech where he exorted the crowd by saying "if I can get a million people...I will be your next president".  At the time, I thought, he's gonna need a lot more that a million people.  However, I think I can see what he may have been envisioning.

As of today, approximately 934,000 people have donated to his campaign and they are aiming for 1 million in the next few weeks.  In 2004, according to Wikipedia, approximately 121 million people voted in the general election.

If each of the approximately 1 million donors to Barack Obama's campaign can reach out to 100-150 new people, is it not possible he could get that many votes in the general election by himself?

If enough of these people who were motivated enough to give their hard earned $$ to invest in this campaign, were willing to spend a weekend or just an afternoon canvassing, having a meetup, inviting people to a house party, neighbors to neighbors, coworkers to coworkers, handing out fliers, setting up visibility booths, phone banking, etc...with the right inspiration, maybe?

Of course, some will do more, others will do less, and some will do nothing,  but a million individuals making the effort to convince just 100-150 people between now and Nov. 4th could make this thing a reality.   Am I completely crazy here? What do you think?
